Image format guide
JPG vs PNG: which image format should you use?
JPG and PNG are both common, but they are good at different jobs. JPG is usually best for photos. PNG is usually best for graphics, screenshots, sharp edges, and transparency.
Use JPG for photos
JPG uses lossy compression, which works well for natural images with many colors and gradients. It can make photos much smaller, but too much compression can create blocky artifacts or rough edges.
Use PNG for graphics and transparency
PNG preserves sharp edges and can include transparent backgrounds. It is useful for logos, diagrams, interface screenshots, and images with text. PNG files can be larger than JPG for photos.
Quick choice
- Photo: JPG is usually smaller.
- Transparent background: PNG is the safer choice.
- Screenshot with text: PNG may look sharper.
- Upload form compatibility: JPG is accepted almost everywhere.
