Podcast and voice memo conversion guide

Podcast drafts and phone voice memos often start as M4A or WAV files. Before sending them to someone else, it can help to create an MP3 review copy that is smaller and easier to play.

Review copy vs production file

A review copy is for listening, feedback, transcription, or quick sharing. It does not need to be the highest-quality source. A production file is the version you keep for editing and final export. Do not replace the production file with a low-bitrate review MP3.

Suggested workflow

  1. Keep the original phone memo, WAV, or project export.
  2. Trim long silence or unrelated sections.
  3. Boost volume only if the voice is too quiet.
  4. Export MP3 for review or upload.

Quality choices

For spoken podcast notes, 128 kbps MP3 is often enough. If the file includes music, room sound, or examples you want reviewers to hear clearly, use 192 kbps or higher. For final podcast publishing, follow the requirements of your hosting platform.
