File workflow
Why you should keep original files before converting
Conversion tools are convenient, but many tasks create a new version with different quality, dimensions, or format support. A safe workflow keeps the source file and treats converted files as delivery copies.
Original vs output
The original is the file you received, recorded, exported, or photographed. The output is the copy made for a specific task. A compressed MP3, resized JPG, trimmed clip, or boosted audio file may be perfect for sharing, but it should not replace the only original unless you are sure.
When this matters most
- Audio compression: lower bitrate exports can lose detail.
- Image compression: JPG quality changes can add visible artifacts.
- Resize: smaller pixel dimensions cannot restore the original resolution later.
- Trim: unused parts are removed from the output copy.
A simple naming method
Keep the original file name, then add a short output label. For example, save a delivery file as lesson-recording-mp3.mp3 or poster-web-1200px.jpg. Clear names make it easier to avoid sending the wrong file.
